Once upon a time not so long ago, women rarely travelled on their own. But as women joined the workforce and took up jobs which required them to become mobile, many had to learn to negotiate the many challenges of being a woman on the road. Either out of necessity or curiosity, more women are overcoming these challenges simply because the rewards are too tempting. But there remain many where the fear of independent travel remains very real and limiting. Our panellists discuss what are the challenges of travel for women and how to beat them.

Travel need not be just about satisfying one's wanderlust but also has potential to benefit local communities. Beyond the economic benefits of bringing foreign currency into a local economy, travellers can also impact people in the communities they visit through socially-conscious travel choices, participating in various activities and even actively giving back to the communities they have embraced. This panel features two women who found that their initial visits to various communities made such a profound impression on them, that they returned to give something back to those communities, and one woman who's made it her mission to shine a light on the ordinary Indian woman.

We no longer live in a safe society. On a daily basis, either in the media or first hand from people we know, we hear about break-ins, theft, robbery, assaults, rape, attacks and other violent crimes. Participants will learn practical advice, tips and techniques to help them protect themselves in their daily lives in a variety of situations, including travelling at home and abroad, as well as daily situations such as going to and from the office. The first half hour of this workshop is a talk on protection tips while the remainder of the class is a hands-on learning experience. All participants should come in comfortable clothing, prepared for an active session. Everyone is encouraged to have a towel and water as well.
As overseas (and even domestic) travel becomes more accessible to women, and more and more women travel, they come face to face with different situations in diverse cultures. Some of these situations may be at best annoying and at worst, dangerous. In some countries sexual harassment is a hazard that every woman traveller needs to be prepared for. In this panel, three experienced women travellers will share their experiences of such harassment, how they managed to deflect the unwanted attention and in unavoidable circumstances, overcame it.

What does it mean to 'reclaim' the ocean and cut down trees for a highway, a mall, and progress? What does it mean to be a man and a woman? What does the man who dreamt of drowning in the ocean before jumping off the Penang Bridge and Bersih 5 have in common?
Riwayat (from 'riwayat hidup,' Malay for 'life story') asks these questions and brings to the stage a brutally honest, impactful, and sometimes hilarious devised piece -- of movement, multi-lingual text, and original soundscape -- that reacts to the world around and within us, investigating the shared memories and stories of living and being in Malaysia now.
