Out of mere curiosity to experience what she couldn’t imagine, Petrina flew to Stockholm on a whim. Her intention was to see how long she could survive in Europe with only $200. (It finished after 3 months.) Despite being entirely broke, she decided to attempt hitchhiking all the way back to Kuala Lumpur. Sleeping at petrol stations, digging through trash for food, escaping from indecent drivers, all became a norm. But she did it. The kindness of strangers kept her going. She crossed from Europe into Asia, even passing through the Balochistan terrorist zone at the border of Iran and Pakistan. 13 months and 22 countries later… Petrina was home.

"Women & Independent Travel: The Greatest Challenges & Why We Should Do It Anyway" - Moderated by Anita Ahmad

Once upon a time not so long ago, women rarely travelled on their own. But as women joined the workforce and took up jobs which required them to become mobile, many had to learn to negotiate the many challenges of being a woman on the road. Either out of necessity or curiosity, more women are overcoming these challenges simply because the rewards are too tempting. But there remain many where the fear of independent travel remains very real and limiting. Our panellists discuss what are the challenges of travel for women and how to beat them.

"Travel & Making A Positive Impact" - Moderated by Sumitra Selvaraj

Travel need not be just about satisfying one's wanderlust but also has potential to benefit local communities. Beyond the economic benefits of bringing foreign currency into a local economy, travellers can also impact people in the communities they visit through socially-conscious travel choices, participating in various activities and even actively giving back to the communities they have embraced. This panel features two women who found that their initial visits to various communities made such a profound impression on them, that they returned to give something back to those communities, and one woman who's made it her mission to shine a light on the ordinary Indian woman.

However, with the lovely memories come hard times. She was once hit by a car and has been sexually harassed several times while on the road. Jin's admitted to being fearful at times, but the reason she hasn't and won't give up is that she loves she is doing. Jin is still on the road to finding her way back home through South East Asia and Oceania on her bicycle. Speaker, Founder of The Godmothers
Nelleisa, aged 34 was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer, Stage 3 in May 2016 and underwent a single mastectomy, 16 rounds of chemotherapy and 15 radiotherapy over the period of 7 months. As she was going through treatment, an ex colleague was inspired by her recovery story and drew a portrait of her displaying the strength which was embodied while going through treatment with the tagline "Screw Cancer". The portrait was then printed on tshirts which was quickly sold out and the profits went to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. With that, Nell and her best friend created the brand "The Godmothers", where it carries messages of strength and hope on their journey to further amplify on matters to cancer awareness. From conveying messages via t-shirts, it then expanded to more initiatives where she hopes to inspire more individuals, not only cancer warriors and survivors but healthy individuals where one should not stop when theres a block, but to continue to strive for what may seem impossible. Nell loves to travel to new places, and also new adventures where despite her situation, she just completed her Open Water certification and next would be to conquer Mt Kinabalu and Mt. Rinjani. "Always believe in yourself and never stop doing what you love best. Just because you have cancer, life takes a halt." | | Speaker for: | WHEN YOU THINK CANCER STOPS YOU FROM LIFE Sometimes, you hear dark stories on how Cancer stops you from doing what you love. Freshly out of surgery, Nell had the same thoughts. But realizing how pointless it would be to think that life has come to an end, it is only just beginning. "Riwayat"

What does it mean to 'reclaim' the ocean and cut down trees for a highway, a mall, and progress? What does it mean to be a man and a woman? What does the man who dreamt of drowning in the ocean before jumping off the Penang Bridge and Bersih 5 have in common?

Riwayat (from 'riwayat hidup,' Malay for 'life story') asks these questions and brings to the stage a brutally honest, impactful, and sometimes hilarious devised piece -- of movement, multi-lingual text, and original soundscape -- that reacts to the world around and within us, investigating the shared memories and stories of living and being in Malaysia now.
